The Heraldry Society of Scotland was founded in 1977 with
the objective of promoting the study of heraldry and encouraging
its correct use in Scotland and Overseas.
Genealogical information (for family history research
etc) from the Registers of Births, Deaths & Marriages
and other sources at the General Register Office for Scotland.
The project which is enabling access to the Registers
of Scotland information base in Edinburgh from anywhere in
the world as well as general information about the Land Register
and its predecessor the Register of Sasines...
"Scotland led the field in setting up a compulsory
public system showing transmissions of interests in land.
After one or two abortive attempts in the 16th century, an
Act of the Scots Parliament of 1617 (The Registration Act)
set up the Register of Sasines. The purpose of the register
was to make available to the public details of transactions
in land. A General Register located in Edinburgh was set up
where deeds affecting any land in any part of Scotland
could be recorded."
